The role of power in leadership is that it provides a means of influencing the followers. Power enables leaders to affect their followers. It helps them implement their decisions and marshal followers to achieve their goals. Power in teams helps individual members determine the way in which they will do the work, the work process they choose, and the setting of goals. A team that is effective also has power and uses it for goal setting and influencing decisions that affect the team/team members.
The first power source available to top executives is formal positional power that gives them legitimacy. The second source of power is their ability to punish an employee or a team. For example, an important project is taken away. The third source of power is their ability to reward employees. The fourth source of power for top executives is their managerial ability, skills, and knowledge. The fourth source of power for top executives is the trust and respect they develop in the organization (d).
Each of the sources of power is also a source of power corruption. For example, coercive power can be misused to exploit employees. Reward power can be used to reward wrongdoers.
The first method of preventing power corruption is to monitor and control the behavior of leaders in the organization. The second methods is creating a code of conduct for executives and have them understand it and sign it. The third method is to identify power corruption and take deterrent action against the perpetrator. This deters further power corruption.
Changes in the use of power, if done appropriately can be beneficial and can make leaders more effective. For example, one leader uses coercive power when dealing with a section of front line workers, he uses reward power when dealing with sales persons, and uses expert power when interacting with research scientists. Appropriate changes in use of power can make a leader effective and help the organization achieve its objectives.
