Self-Reflection

The practice of self-awareness and self-reflection for those in leadership roles goes back thousands of years to the ancient philosophers and teachers.

By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest. – Confucius

Self-reflection is the key to effective leadership. If we are to improve our leadership skills, then it is important that we are aware of our strengths and weaknesses, our values and behaviors, and the ways in which we attempt to influence others. In other words, self-awareness and self-reflection is about learning to understand our leadership style.

Self-Reflection Assignment

(You are not required to comment on your classmates posts this week)

The end of the semester is a good time for self-reflection. Before you start thinking about moving forward, let’s take a glance backwards.

Write yourself a letter, addressed to your younger self, just as you were starting out on your college days or career path. The letter should give your younger self advice on how to be a great leader based on the knowledge you acquired and what you learned in this class. Take it a step forward, if you like, and include how this pandemic is affecting you and what it has taught you or made you realize about life.

After you submit this letter, keep a copy for yourself and when you find yourself in a future leadership journey, take time out every now and then to read it again. I promise you it will be better than any one-on-one session you will have with a paid consultation or coach.
