Someone uses a system of pulleys to lift a heavy load

Someone uses a system of pulleys to lift a heavy load. The person pulls 5 meters of rope and the load only raises 1 meter. How does the energy required to lift the load with pulleys compare to the energy needed to just pick it up without a machine? The answer is the same amount of energy, Why is it the same amount of energy?
