EL4895 Harmonic Protection in the 21st Century
Power quality became a problem in the latter decade of the 20th century as a result of a rapid increase in the use of air-conditioning and chiller systems; and use of stepper motors. The main technical solution in local networks was by use of capacitors. Regulation (GS3?) and tariffs were also able to influence the impact of harmonic distortion on power quality.
What has happened since the turn of the Century?
This is a very open question. It does not necessarily require filed trials and in any case, a desktop approach using appropriate triangulation methods is likely to reveal where work needs doing (by someone else next year)
Engineer needed; knowledge of electrical regulations useful. Experience of power factor correction design also useful.
Depends on the student’s aims and chosen objectives.
1.Historical changes in technology, tariff and regulation since 2000
2.Identification of the state of the art and what work is now needed in this area
3.Independent project
