Psych 2004 Psychology
This optional assignment, worth 20%, can replace your grade on either the October or February exams (i.e., you can only do one optional assignment). OR can be used to reduce all exams to worth 80% and the assignment worth 20%.
The purpose of this assignment is to have you critically reflect on one aspect of abnormal psychology, and to conduct a search of the scholarly literature to help inform your conceptualizations. To answer the question, you must identify, read, and cite at least 10 peer-reviewed articles, and produce an essay 10-12 pages in length (plus title page and references). Make sure that you cite each source in your essay.
Direct quotations do NOT count towards word or page count so use those sparingly, only when you cannot put the information in your own words.
You must choose one of the following questions to answer:
Question 1: What are recovered/repressed memories, and what is the controversy surrounding these types of memories? Provide evidence “for” and “against” recovered/repressed memories.
Question 2: How was DSM-5 developed, and what are the controversies surrounding it?
Question 3: What is the evidence for and against use of projective tests (e.g., Rorschach Inkblot Test)?
Question 4: What are the controversies surrounding DSM 5 “addictive disorders”? Eg. Gambling is now an official diagnosis, how did it get there? What about sex addiction or food addiction? Others? How do official criteria fit or not fit in such “behavioural” addictions? How might this section of the DSM look in the future? (ie more or fewer diagnoses?).
